About Us

This is a centre for the community of Glenesk in Angus and home to the much admired Glenesk Folk Museum. It is community owned by the Glenesk Trust and run by a lively team of staff and volunteers.

The original Retreat, now demolished, was a cottage, built by Captain Wemyss in the 1840s as an escape from the sea. Newly refurbished, it continues to offer a genial mix of the tranquil and convivial, for everyone.

New and old come together here. Museum displays change throughout the season as does the variety of stock in our enticing shop. The cafe serves freshly made meals and snacks from seasonal produce, the nature trail changes its look through the year, the archive room offers up endless surprises and our conference, wedding and party facilities are wonderfully flexible.

All the while however, whatever the weather, you can be assured of stunning views and a very warm welcome.

A wonderful array of domestic and agricultural objects, together with photographs and other artefacts, tells fascinating intertwined stories of lives lived on the land over centuries.

Reconstructed rooms recreate life in the glen in Victorian times along with period dressing up, toys and activities.
